WHY FN WAS BORN?
The 1st 5 Nations Squash Championship in 2005 was started by Duncan Steele, Richard Stones (the then Squash Coach at Poli Squash) and Marcus Berrett in October 2004 sat drinking beer at Carlsberg pub.. It started as a team match just between Queens Halifax and Poli Squash, so that Marcus could bring his team mates over to Milan to visit the club in which he would be starting work in September 2005.
Soon after we decided the date 30th April 1st May 2005, Marcus played in the Edinburgh Open, organised by Simon Boughton who worked as a Squash Coach at Poli in 1993, Simon offered to bring Edinburgh to play.
Richard played in a tournament in Germany and then invited Munich Squash over to play......the following year they could come and that's when Beindersheim were invited, Marcus plays Bundesliga for them.
Geneva were invited as the club manager, Bob Lincoln, is a ex England Junior coach in the years when Marcus was a national junior.
The Chi (Chicester Squash Club) were invited in 2006, Pete Genever not only being a wonderfully talented squash player is also very good social quality.....and great person to have at any event.
The 2007 event offered a place to Pontefract after Malcolm Willstrops visit to the 2006 he asked if he could bring a team along.
The 2006 event was moved to the end of May so that the Club Championship Final could be played on the Friday and so that the 2007 would coincide with Poli Squash's 20th Anniversary.
Every year 4 top professional players are invited.
2005: Marcus Berrett, Alister Walker, Adrian Grant, Lawrence Delasaux.
2006: Chris Simpson, Pete Genever, Marcus Berrett, Lee Beachill.
2007: Saurav Ghosal, Lee Beachill, Marcus Berrett, Pete Genever.
So that's how it started and all the teams became involved in this ever growing event.
